We’re a new research group, based at the University of Bristol’s School of Biochemistry. I’m always eager to hear from talented and curious scientists interested in joining the lab.
Dr Jack Hardwick
Group leader | Lecturer in Biochemistry
I undertook postdoctoral research at Cambridge in the lab of Prof Sir Shankar Balasubramanian FRS, where I was awarded a Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowship. I obtained my doctorate under the supervision of Prof Tom Brown at Oxford.
Before this, I undertook research projects at McGill University, Montréal, working in the labs of Profs Gonzalo Cosa and Hanadi Sleiman, and at Southampton with Prof Jonathan K Watts, where I obtained an integrated Master’s degree in Chemistry.
Alongside my role at Bristol, I sit on the Early Career Investigator Advisory Board of the journal Nucleic Acids Research (Oxford University Press) and the committee of the Royal Society of Chemistry‘s Nucleic Acids Group.

Sumeya Mukhtar
PhD student (starting Oct ’25)
I am originally from Ontario, Canada, where I earned a BSc in Life Sciences and an MSc in Medical Science from McMaster University. During my MSc, I focused on exploring the effects of epigenetic drugs on the expression of neurotrophic factors, which deepened my passion for understanding the role of epigenetics in biological processes. I’m excited to continue investigating the complex patterns of DNA modifications in neurons and their implications for neurodegenerative diseases.
